Video Oral Histories of the Green Garage

Last month, Liz Riedman, an Anthropology Master's student at Wayne State University, interviewed three of the original founders of the Green Garage, Helen Bradley and Don and Mitzi Carter. The interviews were recorded and are below for you to listen to. Deconstruction continues

While we all work in our various areas, deconstruction continues. We have begun to accept that the bang of the hammer will be a part of our lives for the foreseeable future. Our son, Tom, back from Michigan State for the summer, has been doing most of the heavy work. Here he is with one of the front windows he has been taking apart. With everything he takes apart, he carries the material to the newer part of the building, where materials are being stored for future use. This process definitely takes longer than the traditional method of putting everything into a dumpster. But it keeps stuff out of the waste stream and I'm assuming will probably save a bit of money! Reusing materials

All the time we have held meetings at the Green Garage this fall and winter, Joe Gallagher has been slowly working on the interior deconstruction. He is not carrying anything out to a dumpster, however, because we wanted to reuse as much of the materials as possible. So right now we have rooms that are beginning to fill with building materials, such as the room pictured below. Fortunately, we have also been working on what to do with these materials. Once a week a group meets, appropriately titled the materials group, and right now their mission is to research reuse possibilities for things, such as fiberboard ceiling panels.
