Academic Business Writing and Editing, eBook and Self-Publishing, and Small Business Marketing and Consulting
What do they do?
The Writing It Right For You companies are actually three businesses:
Writing It Right For You, founded in 2008, is a writing and editing company that provides business and academic writing, editing, copywriting, and marketing services to businesses and scholars around the world.
Detroit Ink Publishing, founded in 2012, is an independent publishing house that provides writing/ghostwriting, editing, and manuscript preparation services, as well as ebook & print book publishing.
Your Business Your Brand Creatively, founded in 2014, is a marketing system that offers brand marketing and management services to Detroit-grown businesses.
Who’s in charge?
Writer, editor, entrepreneur, and former Detroit Public Schools English teacher Pamela Hilliard Owens; however, Detroit Ink Publishing was co-founded by her husband, Keith A. Owens, the senior editor of The Michigan Chronicle.
When did her business start?
Pam started Writing It Right For You in July 2008. But after launching the business, she and Keith realized that they had a multitude of authors as clients, and thus, in 2012, Detroit Ink Publishing was born. They then found that many creative professionals needed branding and marketing assistance, and this observation resulted in Your Business Your Brand Creatively in 2014.
How did her business start?
As an English major, Pam noticed people often ask her to “check” or proofread written documents. She had enough orders that she realized, as she put it, “Hey, I can make money doing this!” Throughout the month of June (2008), Pam began to teach herself the skills of running a business. Come July 7th that same year, she was ready to get the ball rolling. “We [now] have clients in 14 countries, a partner in Abu Dhabi, and a satellite office in Birmingham, England,” stated Owens after explaining that she received her first international client in September 2008 after he spotted her 1-page, self-made website.
What are her goals?
When asked what her goals were, Pam replied, “The goals I have for my businesses are to help my clients to achieve their goals. When my clients are successful, I am successful.”
What I’ve learned:
As stated before, choosing a rigid education path is not always the answer; however, in Pam’s case she knew from the 2nd grade she wanted to be an English teacher, and she went to college to pursue this dream. As a result, her three business were born. Nonetheless, everyone’s life will not be this concrete or track-A-leads-to-track-B minded. But Pam’s story gives me hope that the passions I am in love with today will lead to a tomorrow where I shall be completely smitten with my career choices.
